The maximum long-term power, often referred to as RMS, AES or nominal power, represents the highest power a loudspeaker can handle over the long term without risk of damage. Higher RMS amplifier power is acceptable, providing a margin for dynamic peaks. When distortion occurs, the volume should be reduced.
The number of bands refers to the number of frequency bands that the loudspeaker or system reproduces. A single-band loudspeaker produces all the sounds from a single transducer, while a multi-band loudspeaker has multiple transducers, each optimised for a specific frequency range (e.g. high, mid, low frequencies). Multiband systems often provide better sound quality because each band can be reproduced by a transducer designed specifically for that frequency range.
Subwoofers are speakers designed to reproduce low frequencies, usually referred to as bass. There are two basic types of subwoofers: active and passive. Active subwoofers have their own amplifier integrated directly into the unit, while passive subwoofers require an external amplifier for power. Active subwoofers are often considered more user-friendly because they do not require additional equipment to function, while passive subwoofers can provide a higher level of control over the sound.
