War of the Worlds
Poisonous war gases, laser beams, ingenious amphibious transporters, effective flamethrowers, durable alloys, powerful piercing mechanisms. No, it really doesn't seem like humanity stands any chance against uninvited visitors from Mars. At the end of the 19th century, when Martian spaceships land near London, the greatest feats of human technology are the unwieldy and inaccurate cannon and the combat steamship. The invaders' cold and emotionless intelligence steamrolls the emotion-driven Earthlings, who are spoiled by the comforts of civilisation. Not only are newspapers barely being published, libraries are closed, trains are not running on schedule, and no theatres are performing – but, if you please, there is nothing left to eat, and a struggle for bare survival is raging. The War of the Worlds thus also becomes a war with one's own selfishness, cowardice, pettiness, and fear. Will traditional moral values triumph, or the law of the strongest? Can humanity unite against the enemy? Do the Martians have any weaknesses, and is there something on Earth they didn't account for when planning their invasion? And above all – is an attack from space really such a pure fantasy that we don't have to fear it in the future?
