Victorious city
A story hidden in the ashes of a fallen empire
Hidden in a clay pot. Sealed with wax. Buried in the heart of a ruined palace amidst the ashes of one of the greatest, almost forgotten Indian empires. A story waiting to be told.
In the fourteenth century AD, in the south of the land we now call India, nine-year-old Pampa Kampana hears the voice of a goddess for the first time. She vows to her that she will ensure no woman ever suffers the same fate as her beloved mother. With the help of miracles, Pampa builds a great city called Bisnaga – “victory city” – where women are equal to men. But every creation can escape its creator's control, and Bisnaga is no exception.
In many ways, this multi-layered text is reminiscent of the tales from One Thousand and One Nights, while the blend of intrigue and the supernatural brings to mind contemporary pop culture phenomena like Game of Thrones. With his latest novel, Rushdie once again pays homage to the story, which, unlike people and empires, is immortal. In the author's own words: The only victors are the words.

Reviews:
An extravagant mixture of myth and fairytale, comedy and melodrama, celebrating the power of women and the enduring power of storytelling.
