The Ostrava Murder Squad
The Cases of Ostrava's CID Chief, Luboš Valerián
A deviant bludgeoning women to death with a stone. A monster raping his victims with a willow switch. A phantom murdering miners in a deep mine. A pensioner using Semtex to deal with his frustrations... This is just a fraction of the cases handled by the former investigator and head of the General Crime Department of the Regional Directorate of the Police of the Czech Republic for the Moravian-Silesian Region, Luboš Valerián, who also headed Ostrava's murder squad until 2022. During his career, he was involved in investigating more than a thousand of the most serious crimes in the Ostrava region – an area that has often surpassed even Prague in violent crime statistics. He hunted monsters who murdered their victims without batting an eyelid, driven by greed, jealousy, and sexual deviance. Twelve stories that have left an indelible mark on the history of Czech criminalistics will terrify, shock, and force the reader to contemplate the value of human life. Many of them have not been published in detail before and are almost unknown to the general public.
The collaboration between journalist Tomáš Lánský and Colonel Luboš Valerián has produced a title that brings to life the stories of the murderers, as well as their victims and the oft-overlooked bereaved. The individual chapters present the reader with the methods used to catch and convict the perpetrators, as well as analysing similar cases from the history of Czech criminalistics. The book is accompanied by over 170 previously unpublished photographs from police archives.

Luboš Valerián
Born in 1957, he joined the then-SNB (National Security Corps) in 1976. After graduating from the Basic Police School in Prague, he served at the MO VB Prague 4-Nusle, then at the OO VB Frýdek-Místek, and from 1981 as an investigator at the District Investigation Office in Frýdek-Místek. Between 1982–1986, he studied at the University of the SNB, 4th Faculty of VB Investigation in Bratislava, graduating with the title JUDr. He also obtained a Ph.D. there in 2006, by then as part of the Academy of the Police Force of the Slovak Republic. After returning to the District Investigation Office in Frýdek-Místek, he moved in 1988 as an investigator to the Regional Investigation Office of the then-North Moravian Region. Here, he dealt with the investigation of violent crime. After the establishment of the SKPV (Criminal Police and Investigation Service) in 2001, he became the head of the General Crime Department, which, among other things, dealt with violent crime. He held this position, with a short break when he was the Director of the Office of the Regional Directorate of the Police of the Czech Republic for the Moravian-Silesian Region and Commander of the SKPV, until his retirement in 2022 with the rank of Colonel. During his career (almost 47 years), he worked his way up through the basic ranks (from patrol service through to investigator at the District and Regional Investigation Offices, and finally to senior management roles). He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Kriminalistika and the journal Kriminalistický sborník, where he is also an active contributor with more than fifty articles. He founded and taught a security course at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ostrava, and currently teaches security courses at Palacký University, Faculty of Science in Olomouc, at the Pan-European University, Faculty of the University of Entrepreneurship and Law in Ostrava, and at the Institute for Public Administration Education in Prague, based in Benešov. He supervises bachelor's, master's and rigorous theses, acts as their opponent, and is a reviewer of several university textbooks and professional publications.
