The Investigator – Crimes of the Privileged
What do war criminals, dictators, corrupt politicians and high-ranking officials have in common? The belief that they are untouchable and that their power places them above the law.
Vladimír Dzuro, an emeritus police counsellor and former head of UN investigation teams, spent almost thirty years investigating people at the very top of the power structure. He participated in the first-ever arrest of a war criminal since the end of the Second World War, the mayor of the Croatian city of Vukovar. As the first Czech investigator for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, he solved cases in the Balkans that literally made history.
In his second book, he moves from mass graves to the highest echelons of global diplomacy. He uncompromisingly exposes systemic failures, billion-dollar financial frauds, and the abuse of diplomatic cover right within the very structures meant to protect world peace and security. He maps the behind-the-scenes workings of international institutions, from headquarters in New York and Vienna to crisis areas in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria. He shows how easily even those in the highest positions can succumb to the intoxication of absolute power—and the consequences this has for ordinary people and the entire world.
Vyšetřovatel – Zločiny privilegovaných (The Investigator – Crimes of the Privileged) is a chillingly authentic first-hand account. It offers the personal perspective of a man who repeatedly risked his own life during investigations and for whom the enforceability of the law is a lifelong mission. Above all, however, it proves that not even the most powerful should be above the law.
Because crime knows no borders. And justice must not yield to power.
