The Birth of the Czech State

A look at the earliest history of the Czech state by a renowned historian

In his book, historian and archaeologist Petr Charvát gives a comprehensive picture of the emergence and formation of the early Czech state, which he traces from the first signs of social and political organisation in the early Middle Ages to the consolidation of statehood and princely power under Břetislav I. The author places the development of the Slavic population in our territory in a broader European context, but also points to numerous influences and stimuli coming from non-European cultures. The focus is not only on political developments, but also on economic relations or cultural and religious changes, especially the gradual penetration of Christianity.
