That was Majdanek, Part 2

The second and concluding volume of the monograph charting the history of the Waffen-SS prisoner-of-war and concentration camp in Lublin, popularly known as Majdanek. This is the very first original Czech-language book dedicated to a comprehensive history of this camp.

Together, both volumes present a broad monographic overview of Majdanek, primarily intended for Czech and Slovak readers. The author drew from a wide range of archival materials, books, articles, and his own interviews with historians and witnesses, mainly from Poland.

The second volume covers the period from Majdanek's transformation into a concentration camp in February 1943 up to the present-day state of the former camp site. It builds on the division of Majdanek into individual prisoner fields and touches upon new, specific topics such as the displaced persons, the large crematorium, and the largest mass execution in the history of the Nazi camps, known as "Harvest Festival", with special attention paid to the detailed genesis of the State Museum at Majdanek. It also includes a deeper insight into the prisoners' cultural life, including Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations, and outlines the most interesting and breathtaking prisoner escapes. Fully in line with the Polish saying, "who will free us from the liberators", a chapter is dedicated to the occupation of the Lublin camp in relation to the arrival of Red Army soldiers. The final part aspires to be a sort of guide to places connected with the history of Majdanek for the modern-day visitor to Lublin.

The author has extensive experience in publishing books on similar topics, such as those about the Operation Reinhardt camps of Treblinka and Sobibór. He is the co-author of an English-language book on Treblinka, which he wrote with the prominent British historian Chris Webb. He currently lectures on the history of Nazi camps at the Department of Historical Sciences, Faculty of Arts, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
