Sisters from Berlin
Berlin, 1958. In the divided city, the differences between the western and eastern parts are becoming ever more pronounced. The consequences of the war – the division of the world into two irreconcilable camps – are felt by people on both sides in the political and economic struggle. The inhabitants of West Berlin have become accustomed to a free life of prosperity earned through hard work, while the people in the East have adapted to an existence in a restrictive regime, in which they seek all sorts of ways to circumvent the limiting rules. Political tension is rising all over the world, but no one yet knows what awaits Berlin.
The youngest of the Thalheim sisters, Flori, a determined rebel with a fragile soul, returns to Berlin from Paris after sixteen months on the run from her family. Her pockets are empty, but she has an immense desire to paint. How will her family receive her? Will she be allowed to study at the art academy? The Thalheim fashion house is prospering, but Flori cannot imagine a life connected to the family business.
She has no idea that her cousin Gregor and his friend Hotte are now living in the family flat on Bleibtreustrasse. They welcome her with open arms. However, the initial relief is replaced by a difficult struggle to achieve her goal. Nothing comes easy; relationships within the family become complicated, as do her personal relationships with men. But Flori perseveres in her search for shapes, colours, love, and herself.
Over the course of five years, petticoats are replaced by a more casual style of dress, rock and roll gives way to the twist, and Elvis Presley is overshadowed by The Beatles. Which of Flori's dreams will come true at a time when an impenetrable wall is being built in Berlin and John F. Kennedy delivers his most famous speech there?
