The QNAP TS-1655-8G NAS network storage is designed for storing, backing up, and centralising data in both business and home environments. This tower device offers a total of 16 bays for hard drives and SSDs. The 8-core Intel Atom C5125 processor runs at 2.8GHz and uses the 64-bit x86 architecture. The basic configuration includes 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be expanded up to 128GB if needed. The system supports recording from IP cameras and file sharing using SAMBA, HFS, and CIFS protocols.

Hybrid architecture
The design combines 12 bays for 3.5″ hard drives and 4 bays for fast 2.5″ SSDs. This hybrid concept speeds up access to frequently used files on the network. The device supports SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s hard drives, allows for hot-swapping, and supports the configuration of various RAID array types.
Fast M.2 NVMe slots
The motherboard has two integrated slots for fast M.2 NVMe 2280 drives with a PCIe Gen 3 × 2 interface. You can use these bays to configure an SSD cache or fast storage pools. SSD cache technology accelerates demanding database operations and shortens access times when transferring a large number of small files. For stable operation at higher temperatures, it is advisable to install additional heatsinks on the M.2 drives.
Network connectivity
The device offers two integrated 2.5GbE Ethernet ports, which are backward compatible with 1GbE, 100Mb/s, and 10Mb/s speeds. The network interface supports port trunking to increase overall throughput. Measured transfer speeds are 582MB/s for reading and 525MB/s for writing data. It also supports Wake on LAN on the 2.5GbE ports only, and Jumbo Frame transfers.
Hardware expansion options
Three free PCIe Gen 3 × 4 slots expand the system's hardware capabilities with additional interfaces. Users can install add-on network cards with speeds of 5GbE, 10GbE, or 25GbE. The slots support various card sizes, with the first slot accommodating a card up to 260 × 111.15 × 37.52mm. You can also use the free bays to install other controllers.
QTS operating system
The QTS operating system provides a graphical interface for managing all the network storage functions. Integrated applications simplify the complete backup of Windows and macOS computers, mobile devices, and public cloud services. The system supports the management of up to 16000 local user accounts and 200000 domain user accounts. Tools for running virtual machines are also available.
ZFS file system support
The device fully supports the alternative QuTS hero operating system with the ZFS file system. This system actively prevents silent data corruption using self-healing mechanisms and contributes to end-to-end data integrity. It also supports advanced features such as data compression and deduplication in shared folders, which saves disk space.
