Professional Proofreading: Methods, Orthography, Morphology
Most readers are completely unaware of good proofreading. It only draws attention to itself when it's missing or done poorly.
When a book is created, there are usually two experts standing between the author and the reader: an editor and a proofreader. The editor helps the text take on its best possible form, and the proofreader ensures its linguistic and typographic accuracy. Nevertheless, proofreading has not yet been systematically taught in the Czech environment. Many people therefore enter the field without a unified methodology, clearly defined responsibilities, or knowledge of proven work procedures.
The first volume in the “Professional Proofreading” series offers a comprehensive look at the methods of proofreading work. It shows what the job of a proofreader really entails, where its boundaries lie in relation to the work of the editor and the author, and what knowledge and skills are essential for the professional execution of this profession. At the same time, it analyses some difficult phenomena in the areas of orthography and morphology; syntax, stylistics, and typography will be covered in subsequent volumes of the series. The book is intended for proofreaders, editors, authors, and anyone who wants to understand why some texts seem professional and others do not.
