Office bestiary

How to Survive Amongst Office Monsters—with a Smile and Perspective

In every office, well-disguised but intimately familiar beasts lie in wait. The mood-ruining Dracula who drains the last remnants of your energy, the Anxious Alien who sees a catastrophe in every email, or the Zombie who resists any and all change. Do you recognise them? And do you know how to handle them? The Office Bestiary is a witty and astute guide that shows you how to expose, tame—or elegantly bypass—the office monsters that complicate daily life in the workplace. Forget dry management books; this will make you laugh while also giving you concrete tips on how to manage tricky situations and difficult colleagues.

Get a head start on the office monsters. Learn how to get along with them, or even turn them into your allies.

Martin Eppler

Martin J. Eppler, PhD, grew up in a household of information junkies with more than 20 magazine subscriptions and a two-room library. He therefore wrote a 400-page PhD thesis on information overload (talk about embracing the paradox) and is now the world’s most cited researcher on the topic. He has since moved from the problem to the solution and, in his role as a chaired professor of communications at the University of St. Gallen, has conducted more than 40 projects (many of them experimental) on how visualisation can help overcome overload and transfer knowledge effectively. He is the author of over 200 academic papers and 24 books, several of which have won awards such as “International Business Book of the Year”, “HR Book of the Year”, and “Career Book of the Year”. He has won numerous best paper awards as well as teaching prizes. His research has been featured in Inc. Magazine, the Harvard Business Review, TED.com, Bloomberg Businessweek, MIT Technology Review, and others. He is the inventor of the periodic table of visualisation methods, the let‘s-focus software suite, the synergy map method, and the walk-the-talk meeting approach. In addition to his university duties (where he headed an MBA programme for a number of years), he is an advisor to organisations such as the UN, the European Central Bank, Porsche, Swiss Re, the Anti-Tobacco Fund, Salesforce, and more. He has been a visiting professor at institutions such as Cambridge University, Georgia Tech, Simon Fraser University, and CUFE Beijing.

Andri Hinnen

Andri Hinnen holds a BA in International Affairs and a double Master's degree in Strategy and International Management (SIM/CEMS). He co-founded Zense, a consulting firm and agency specialising in complexity and change communication (zense.ch). He has worked with global brands such as Coca-Cola, Lufthansa, and UBS, visualising their strategies and bringing corporate cultures to life with meaning, sensitivity, and a touch of creative playfulness. He regularly lectures at the University of St. Gallen on reframing complexity, storytelling, visualisation, and sense-making. Andri is also a filmmaker and author. His feature-length documentary Breathing Underwater won the Zurich Film Festival and was acquired by Netflix. Together with his brother Gieri Hinnen, he has written the German non-fiction bestsellers Reframe It and Change It. His personalised children’s book, Welcome to the World, has sold over 100,000 copies and has been translated into several languages. In 2021, Andri’s first novel, Rolf, was published and is currently being adapted into a feature film. In 2024, Andri was selected as a personality-in-residence at the HSG-Square. Andri’s favourite mythical creatures include dragons, giants, and cats.
