My younger brother
Marek lives a typical student life in 1980s Czechoslovakia. He attends lectures, goes to parties, does compulsory military training and relentlessly pursues the beautiful and unobtainable Anna. But she has other concerns. She has become actively involved in circulating Augustin Navrátil's petition for religious and civil liberty—the largest action of its kind in socialist Czechoslovakia. A Catholic, Anna wants to agitate and collect signatures, whatever the cost. Although Marek is not directly involved in the petition, he is paradoxically the one who fares the worst.
Set in a university environment, the novel is narrated by Marek's brother and based on the protagonist's fictional diary. It is also inspired by the real-life experiences and memories of the author, Martin Uhlíř. In his rendering, this return to the 80s is far from a “sweet retro” experience, exploring nuanced themes of faith and different sexual orientations.
Martin Uhlíř (1967) is a journalist and writer. He is interested in science, research, and new technologies. He has been an editor at the weekly magazine Respekt since 2006. He is the author of the non-fiction book Jak jsme se stali lidmi (How We Became Human, 2007) and the novels Sestry (Sisters, Paseka 2021) and Můj mladší bratr (My Younger Brother, Paseka 2024).
