Life, struggle and death under seven flags: the Czechs and Slovaks 1914-1920
They fought for their country…
Almost every family in the Czech and Slovak Republic has a great-grandfather or great-uncle who took part in the First World War, either on the side of Austria-Hungary or as a Czechoslovak legionary. For a long time, however, the view of our soldiers' war effort focused only on those who fought in the legions for an independent Czechoslovakia, and a significant part of the heroic deeds of Czech and Slovak soldiers in the uniforms of the Austro-Hungarian army remained in the background. Czech and Slovak soldiers fought as infantrymen, artillerymen, mountain riflemen and sailors. Thanks to their skills and expertise, they also served as officers in the Austro-Hungarian, Serbian and Russian armies and in the legions. We must also not forget that after the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the creation of an independent Czechoslovakia, they joined forces in the Czechoslovak Army and, hand in hand, thwarted the attempt to create an Austrian Germany, prevented the occupation of Těšínsko by the Poles, and liberated Slovakia. This book is a reminder of their heroic struggle.
The book includes an authentic transcript of the diary of the Imperial and Royal soldier Karel Petrák, who enlisted in Brixen in July 1914, passed through almost all fronts, and his arduous wartime journey ended in France in 1918. From there he returned home to South Bohemia in November 1918. The book also features unique 'feldpost' postcards sent from the front by the publisher's uncle to his sister and parents.
