Handle it with management!
Dogs bring so much joy into our lives, but their behaviour can sometimes make life difficult for us and those around us. Snapping at other dogs, jumping up at people, digging in flowerbeds, barking at anything that appears behind the fence, kitchen raids – all of this can be a real test, even for an otherwise harmonious relationship between a human and their dog.
But management can help you with all of this.
The basis of this method is prevention, i.e., stopping problematic behaviour from developing in the first place. Juliana DeWillems offers practical and easy-to-implement ways that directly reduce the occurrence of frustrating and unwanted behaviour through the thoughtful use of the environment around you. In her book, she explains how dogs learn, why they often behave the way they do, and how we can limit or prevent the behaviour we don't want.
Each chapter is dedicated to one type of problem commonly encountered by dog owners, such as:
- aggression towards other dogs
- jumping up at people
- barking
- pulling on the lead
- running out of doors
- raiding the bin
- counter-surfing
- and many more.
Management can provide the dog owner with immediate relief from problematic behaviour and allow for further steps towards eliminating it. In addition, early implementation of management can prevent the dog from developing behavioural patterns that will require correction with more complex training methods.
