FIFINE K688 White microphone

Sound pickup and directional characteristic

The FIFINE K688 dynamic microphone uses a cardioid directional pattern, which focuses primarily on sound coming from the front. The capsule reduces unwanted noise from the sides and rear, which helps to better separate the voice from ambient sounds. The frequency range of 50Hz to 16000Hz is suitable for capturing spoken word for podcasting, streaming or video creation. A maximum sound pressure level of 130dB SPL allows the microphone to handle even louder sound sources without unwanted distortion.

Ambient noise suppression and pop filter

The microphone's cardioid design helps to reduce unwanted noise from the sides and rear, focusing the pickup on the voice in front of the microphone. The shock mount isolates the microphone body from vibrations transmitted from the desk or microphone arm and helps to reduce low-frequency rumble. At the same time, the dense pop filter reduces the plosives that occur when pronouncing explosive consonants, contributing to a cleaner voice recording.

Connection and outputs

The FIFINE K688 offers a digital USB-C connection as well as an analogue XLR output. USB-C enables a quick plug-and-play connection to a compatible device without installing additional drivers. The XLR connector is used to connect to an external audio interface or mixing console, allowing the microphone to be integrated into a more advanced audio setup. When connected via USB, a 3.5mm headphone output can also be used for direct audio monitoring. An XLR cable is not included in the package.

Controls and display

When connected via USB, you can control important functions directly on the microphone body. The touch-sensitive mute button lets you instantly mute the microphone without having to use computer controls. On the underside, there are separate rotary controls for adjusting microphone gain and the volume of the connected headphones. These control functions are for USB mode; with a standalone XLR connection, adjustments are made via the connected audio device.

Mounting and design

The all-metal body of the FIFINE K688 microphone is complemented by a minimalist design suitable for streaming, podcasting and other content creation. The shock mount uses an elastic suspension that helps to isolate the microphone from shocks and vibrations transmitted from the desk or microphone arm. The K688's design won the iF Design Award 2023. A 5/8" to 3/8" thread adapter can be used for easier attachment to various microphone arms.

Compatibility by connector

When connected via USB, the microphone works in plug-and-play mode with Windows and macOS computers. The USB connection can also be used with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 game consoles. The digital recording works with a 16-bit depth and a 48kHz sampling rate. For an analogue connection via XLR, a compatible audio interface or mixing console is required. The microphone is not compatible with Xbox consoles via USB.

PrincipleMicrophone principle

A dynamic microphone is suitable for open performances, live broadcasts, music production, etc. It uses a magnet and a moving coil to capture sound.
A condenser microphone is mainly used for studio purposes. It has higher sensitivity and lower noise. It requires a separate power supply.

FrequencyFrequency range

The frequency range indicates the range of frequency values that the microphone records. The wider the range, the more sounds it can capture.
Low frequencies (e.g. 20–200Hz): Bass, the lowest tones of instruments (double bass, kick drum) and male voices.
Mid frequencies (e.g. 200–3000Hz): The body of instruments, the foundation of the voice where the ear is most sensitive, important for speech intelligibility.
High frequencies (e.g. 3000–14000Hz): Treble, details, sibilance and the "sparkle" of the sound.
Air band (above 14000Hz): Gives recordings a sense of expensive, super-high-quality sound and space.

SensitivitySensitivity

Microphone sensitivity is the ratio of output voltage to acoustic pressure. It expresses how loud a signal the microphone produces at a given acoustic pressure; higher sensitivity means a stronger voltage and is suitable for quiet studios, while lower sensitivity is better for noisy environments as it amplifies less unwanted ambient noise.
