ASUS ThunderboltEX 4
ASUS ThunderboltEX 4
The ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 expansion card installs into a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, adding two modern Thunderbolt 4 ports to your PC build. This PCIe controller uses an Intel JHL8540 chip, and its official Intel certification confirms reliable operation and full compatibility with the Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 standards. For the card to function correctly, it must be connected to a compatible ASUS motherboard that features a specific 14-1 pin Thunderbolt header, typically found on boards with Intel 500 series chipsets and newer.
Key features of the ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 controller
- Official Intel certification confirms compliance with the Thunderbolt 4 standard
- Bidirectional transfer speed of 40Gb/s
- The first port delivers up to 100W of power
- The second port delivers up to 27W of power
- Connect up to five devices in series to a single port
- Two Mini DisplayPort 1.4 inputs support up to 8K resolution
Controller transfer speed and video output
Each port offers 40Gb/s of bidirectional bandwidth for extremely fast data transfers and smooth, uncompromising video transmission. The card supports connecting high-resolution monitors thanks to two Mini DisplayPort 1.4 input connectors. When connected to your graphics card's output, it provides an image resolution of up to 8K 7680×4320px. The necessary connecting cables are included in the package.
Controller power and connectivity
The first Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port delivers up to 100W of power, effectively replacing a separate adaptor and powering a connected laptop. The second port provides up to 27W for charging smaller devices like phones or tablets. For full fast-charging functionality, you need to connect an additional 6-pin PCIe power connector.
Daisy-chaining devices
Thunderbolt 4 technology supports daisy-chaining. This means you can connect up to five Thunderbolt devices in series to a single port without needing an additional hub or docking station. This simplifies cable management and makes efficient use of each port for multiple peripherals, such as external drives, monitors, or audio interfaces.
