A compassionate mind
Developing a compassionate mind improves psychological well-being and physical health, leading to more fulfilling interpersonal relationships and a social order in which people live better lives. Join psychologist Prof. Paul Gilbert on an impressive journey to the origin of the problems that prevent us from finding enough compassion for ourselves and others.
In his book, the author combines scientific findings from evolutionary biology on the development and functioning of the human brain with the methods of Buddhist psychology and cognitive-behavioural therapy. He describes how two types of brain/mind have developed during evolution. The evolutionarily older type, which humans share with other mammals, includes instincts and emotions. The evolutionarily younger brain/mind, unique to humans, includes reasoning, self-awareness, imagination, and the use of language. The connection between these two parts of the brain has made humans the dominant animal species, able to understand and use the laws of nature for their benefit, but also to abuse them to commit widespread cruelty and destroy the environment.
Humans can be cruel and merciless not only to nature and other people, but also to themselves. It is therefore beneficial for them to be able to understand their minds and consciously develop the ability of compassion. The book describes a number of psychological methods that can help us learn this compassionate mind and thus live a meaningful, contented and harmonious life.
