During the summer stay of Jiří Adam of Dobronín with his wife at her parents' fortress in Panská Lhota, the murder of the parish priest Ignác occurs in the ruins of the nearby Rokštejn castle. But not only that, the mysterious figure of a monk appears in the castle at night. Is he the killer?

After graduating from the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, he worked at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the National Museum. At that time he published more than fifty scientific studies on the history of material culture and several specialist books. He currently lives near Bezděz and devotes himself exclusively to literature and historical journalism. To date, he has published about eighty historical novels and detective stories, four books for young people and, with his wife Alena, two dozen popular science books. Several titles have been published abroad. According to statistics from the National Library, he has been the most read Czech author in Czech libraries in recent years, selling 2 million printed books and over 100,000 audiobooks. He has received numerous literary awards (e.g. IBBY Award, UČS Award, Honorary Award of the Mensa, MOBA Readers' Prize). His novel The Hussite Epic won the Bestseller of the Year title in 2015. For his journalism he received the Kramer Prize awarded by the Association of Independent Media. In 2017, he received a state award for literature.
