Call the nurses.

An unforgettable story of motherhood, community courage and the strength of exceptional women. It is a portrait of an era in which everyday human help and compassion could change lives. It's the 1950s, and twenty-two-year-old Jenny leaves her comfortable home to move into a convent and start working as a midwife in London's poor East End. In her work helping to deliver babies all over London, she gets to know the colourful world of extraordinary people – from the brave and kind nuns she lives with, to a woman with twenty-four children who can't speak English, to prostitutes and dock workers from the rougher parts of the city. Their stories reveal exceptionally powerful life experiences. The author's memoirs authentically capture the world of post-war London, full of poverty, hope, humour and human solidarity. Call the Midwife are the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, which became the basis for the popular BBC television series.
