Curling Irons

When choosing a curling iron, pay attention to the size, material and maximum temperature. Curling irons come in three versions: curling tongs, conical curling wands and automatic curling irons.

Curling iron types

Curling iron (tong)

  • A string of hair is held in place by a clasp.
  • The result is polished ringlets.

Conical curling wand

  • It has a conical shape.
  • The result is natural waves which become narrower at the ends.
  • No clasp

Automatic curling irons

  • Automatic curling
  • Fast and easy
  • The most expensive type

Diameter

  • Approx. from 13 to 38 mm

Smaller barrel (up to 19 mm)

  • Suitable for short and medium length hair (shoulder length), for fine hair
  • Short and firm curls

Larger barrel (from 19 mm)

  • Suitable for long, naturally wavy and strong hair
  • Long, soft curls
  • Different attachments bring different results

Barrel material

  • Important for preventing hair damage
    • Stainless steel: fast heating, the least gentle to your hair
    • Ceramics: even heat distribution, hair is softer
    • Tourmaline: anti-frizz, decreases static electricity
    • Titanium: fast heating (ideal for coarse hair), decreases static electricity
  • The barrel's surface is often made of a combination of materials
  • It can also feature Ionization, which protects and nourishes hair

Temperature settings

  • Important for healthy hair
  • Max. temperature differs based on a hair type
    • Fine hair: 100–130°C
    • Coarse hair: 160–190°C
  • Max. temperature shouldn't exceed 200°C
