An image sensor is a key component that converts light into a digital image. The fractional notation, such as "1/5.8"", refers to an old standard derived from the diameter of vacuum tubes and does not directly indicate the sensor's diagonal in inches. It is important to know that the smaller the number in the denominator of the fraction, the larger the sensor actually is. Thus, a 1/2.5" sensor is larger than a 1/5.8" sensor. Specifically, the 1/5.8" size corresponds to a diagonal of approximately 3.1 mm and is among very small sensors. Devices with such a small sensor can capture less light, which may result in lower image quality, especially in poor lighting conditions. In such situations, digital noise, which manifests as graininess or color speckles, appears more frequently in the image.
