Premium software in a yoghurt pot for 10,000 CZK If you’re looking for a stylish addition to your living room that will reliably drown out even a running hoover and, with its vibrations, slowly push your coffee table all the way out onto the balcony, the Synology DS225+ is a bullseye. For just under 10,000 CZK, I was expecting a decent piece of hardware. Instead, I received a box made of plastic so cheap that they wouldn’t even use it to make a Happy Meal toy in China. It’s all held together by sheer willpower and... vibrations. The star of the evening: Fan The built-in fan is a topic in its own right. The engineers at Synology have apparently decided that users are keen to enjoy an authentic airport runway experience right in their own living rooms. This marvel of engineering can make the whole lightweight plastic beauty vibrate so violently that you worry the NAS might fly off towards Taiwan. Watching a film whilst doing this is a thoroughly relaxing experience – provided you’re wearing noise-cancelling headphones designed for quarry workers. I was amused by the advice given by experts on internet forums: “No problem, just buy a Noctua for 500, take it apart and swap it out!” My question is: Why on earth would I want to tinker with a device that costs ten thousand crowns the moment I’ve unpacked it, buying extra parts and playing at being a watchmaker, just so I can actually breathe in the same room? They might as well include some superglue and a piece of sound-absorbing foam in the pack. Just so I don't end up crying. To be fair, I have to reluctantly admit two things: Software (DSM): That's brilliant. Intuitive, fast, loads of apps. Speed: The data is flying by brilliantly. Verdict Synology has clearly decided that, having written some brilliant software, it can cut corners on the hardware and make it from recycled PET bottles. If you’re planning to keep your NAS in a deep cellar, a soundproofed server room or your neighbour’s garden, you’ll be delighted. If you want to keep it anywhere within earshot, you’ll need strong nerves – or an extra 500 CZK for a fan that should have come fitted as standard. For that price, the hardware is simply a joke.

I switched from the Asustor 5304T, which was a rival to the Synology 923 at the time. It had better specs, especially the 2x 2.5Gb network interface. What bothered me terribly was that the disks never hibernated, because it was always writing to the disk, the problem was solved on the asustor portal, but it was not solved for xyears. Another problem was the design, which constantly resonated very unpleasantly and I turned off the NAS after work. Synology is in a different league. Quiet, disks hibernate, everything works as it should. I bought a DS223j for my family with the purchase of the DS225+ and I was pleased to manage both devices via DSFinder and via the DSM web interface as a Disk station expansion pack.

Quiet, reliable, fast, SW tuned, design dampens the discs well (of course it is audible enough when searching) but the whole design does not vibrate at rest like the competition, see below

RAM can be expanded with any DDR4 module, not only as described by the manufacturer max. +4GB module. I also tried the ECC 16GB module(manufacturer states nonECC) and it loaded and ran for a week without problems. In the end I swapped for 8GB because 16GB was unnecessary overkill for me

The read and write speeds are also higher than the manufacturer's stated speed. With the HAT3310-12T drives, read and write speeds are approximately 280MB/s

Perhaps only the DSFile application, where there is a problem with the session manager. If the app is running in the background on the phone, then the session/token expires and if you open the app after a longer time, it does not connect to the account/NAS and you have to close the app and reconnect.
