When your laptop battery is showing signs of failing and slowing down, you need a new laptop battery. Laptop batteries are helpful as a backup power source. What should you look out for when choosing a laptop battery? Read on and find out.

Laptop Batteries - Original or Compatible?

When choosing a laptop battery, you can choose between the original battery or a compatible battery. Let's see how they differ.

Original batteries are manufactured directly by the laptop manufacturer. They tend to be more expensive, but always offer 100% compatibility.
Compatible batteries are any other batteries that are suitable for your laptop but have not been made by the laptop manufacturer. A compatible battery is usually cheaper than an original battery while having similar characteristics.

You don't have to worry about the availability of original batteries. We have laptop batteries for Lenovo, HP, Asus, and, of course, we also have batteries for Acer, Dell and MSI.

Which Parameters Are Important When Choosing Laptop Batteries?

The most critical parameters of a laptop battery are obviously compatibility. Always check that the battery has been designed for your laptop model. Don't underestimate the other parameters and features of batteries - an improperly chosen battery could irreversibly damage your computer.

Laptop Batteries - Battery Type

The type of laptop battery indicates what material has been used as the source of electrical voltage. The most common are lithium and NiMH batteries.

Li-Ion laptop batteries are lightweight and long-lasting. They do not suffer from the memory effect.
NiMH laptop batteries are cheaper than Li-Ion batteries. They suffer from the memory effect. Today they are hardly used anymore.

The memory effect refers to a condition in which the battery discharges spontaneously during an extended outage.

The Capacity and Number of Cells of Laptop Batteries

The capacity for batteries for laptops is given in milliampere hours (mAh). In general, more capacity means more endurance. A multi-cell battery usually has a longer lifetime. This is due to the distribution of the load between the individual cells.

How Long will the Laptop Battery Keep Going?

We can calculate the expected battery life if we know the battery capacity. Battery manufacturers often include a Wh (watt-hour) figure in addition to the mAh to make it easier to calculate battery life.

Example: calculation for a 60 Wh battery

Battery power of (40 Wh) ÷ Laptop power consumption of (15 W for office work) = 6 hours

How to Use Laptop Batteries Properly?

A laptop battery is a consumable item with a limited lifespan. However, if used correctly, you can significantly extend the service life of your laptop battery. Here are some tips to keep your laptop battery in good shape.

Don't overheat your laptop. Please do not leave it near a heater or in the sun. Low temperatures are not suitable either.
Don't overdo it. Extremes such as constant connection to a power source or frequent discharges down to 0% are not conducive to long battery life.
Give attention to sleep mode. If you can, turn the laptop off from time to time and let the battery "rest".
