In my search for quality sealed headphones that can play beautifully even in so-called. passive mode (headphones off and connected via 3.5mm jack cable), I had some hopes for the older model after trying the WH-1000XM5. Unfortunately, due to my specific needs, they did not come true. First things first. If you use the headphones in "active mode" (i.e. headphones on and connected either by cable or Bluetooth), they sound very good. Compared to the newer XM5 model, they even have a noticeably more open sound. The battery life is great, and so is the ANC. The ear cups are smaller than the newer version, but still very comfortable. The bridge over the head does not squeeze thanks to its greater width and considerable padding. When listening in passive mode (headphones off and connected via 3.5mm jack cable), the sound is unfortunately very "congested", closed and flat. Overall, in this mode, the headphones sound poorly for most music genres. It's a pity that nowadays "consumer headphones" are made to sound good with all sorts of sound enhancement electronics, but without it the quality is not great. Maybe I'm old school, but I would appreciate such good passive closed headphones in prices below 20 thousand crowns. Unfortunately, I can't find it. Tested with SoundBlaster AE-9 sound card.

After 20 months of use, the headphones developed a problem with deafening whistling from the right earpiece. Apparently it somehow ties up the ANC microphone. After turning off noise cancellation the problem disappears, but it can't be set as default setting, so every time I turn it on I have to click in the app to ANC settings and switch it to ambient mode. Which is a pretty lousy workaround for headphones in this price range. Of course, sometimes I forget about it and unexpectedly let out a really painful whistle in my ears-I wouldn't be surprised if it could cause some health problems for someone. In the US, Sony replaced the defective pieces for free with new ones, and since many posts and questions can be found online with this exact problem, it is probably a design flaw. In the Czech Republic, Sony will only refer you to a service center, where it's a very greasy replacement. For me completely unacceptable for such expensive headphones. After the problems with the unusable battery and overheating while charging with the WF-1000XM4, which can't even be replaced/repaired and have been sitting in my drawer for half a year, I'm really done with Sony headphones.
