Hydrophobic lens coating

A hydrophobic coating is a thin layer on a lens that repels water, so droplets form small beads and run off easily. Less water remains on the lens, and the image is less disturbed by distortion from droplets. It is useful when filming in rain, near water or after surfacing while diving. It also makes the lens easier to dry and limits spots left by dried droplets. Its effectiveness gradually decreases through abrasion and cleaning. It is often combined with an oleophobic layer.
