I bought the sander new here on Alza as a replacement for an old Hecht vibratory sander. First impressions were pretty good - it was pleasant to sand, it fit well in the hand and the extraction of sanding dust into the filter box worked great. Pretty soon the first problem appeared - the velcro stops holding the grinding discs (which became apparent with the Bosch after about 3 times less time than with a Hecht vibratory grinder at a third of the price) and more vibration of the grinding plate appeared. The vibrations increased over time until it was no longer possible to keep the grinder on the material being ground. The cause was found to be a large amount of play in the plate fit - the plate could be swung from side to side and there was also considerable axial play. The grinder has been sent for complaint. The complaint was accepted with the understanding that the grinder would be repaired. The complaint was dealt with quite quickly and apart from the long list of spare parts that were replaced, the grinding plate was also replaced, which I did not expect and it was a very pleasant discovery, because just a spare grinding plate costs almost as much as half a grinder. I also bought the original Bosch plate protectors to protect the Velcro, but even these did not miraculously extend the life of the Velcro. After the complaint, the grinder sat for a while, but very quickly on the first project the play on the platen bearing reappeared and since it was three weeks out of warranty, I disassembled the grinder and found that a squeezed shaft under the platen bearing was to blame. The bearing to be pressed on the shaft had a clearance visible to the eye. The material is probably to blame, as the shaft is the same material as the sander fan, which is some soft aluminium alloy, and after a (very short) time it gets squeezed out under the bearing and there is nothing you can do with the sander. I would expect this quality from a no name grinder from the supermarket for a few hundred pennies and not from the "pro" range from Bosch. I know you can't expect miracles for the money, but for a lightly used "blue Bosch" it's quite a shame.
