It can also be mounted on the wall at an angle of 90 degrees.
Poor fitting. The holes in the wall should have more clearance in the other direction too, not just one.

low without the possibility of extension in case you have a higher ceiling
First, make sure the mounting points are located on the projector - e.g. with the Optoma HD144X, the 3 triangles are so close together that the arms of the mount do not form comfortable arms as in the picture, but one needs to be removed and the other 3 cleverly curled under the circular base to allow the projector to be screwed to them while keeping its center of gravity close to the axis of the mount: -)
