I didn't know much about smart feeders, but I'm excited! I am finally starting to understand what birds I am feeding and when they are arriving 🙂 The pack has three basic parts: own physical feeder, camera and solar panel to USB-C. The parts are independent of each other, they can be used completely separately, but of course they fit well together. The actual feeder is well made and looks great. The camera is also very high quality and can be accessed via a mobile app. The app can set up all sorts of things, including bird alerts (and I'll list the species I want or don't want alerted). The camera charges via USB-C; but it doesn't work with stronger chargers. However, a solar panel is also supplied, from which the camera recharges itself. Unless it's completely bustling (or if I deliberately limit the minimum shooting interval to one video every few minutes), it seems to stay charged pretty much forever. Even in winter and in the semi-shade. The attached photos are from screenshots (not in original resolution).
When the camera detects motion, it starts capturing 20 seconds of video (with sound! ), it sends it to the cloud, where it recognizes which birds are there. It shows up immediately in the app or notifies me on my mobile.
Wide range of mobile alerting options (especially by bird species). Creating various bird statistics.
High quality camera
The camera is good quality even at night (and there is the option of infrared light and backlight). Although not much flies overnight (at least not to me). Theoretically, it can also be used as a chat camera 🙂 The good thing is that when there is no movement, the battery does not drain at all.
A misrecognized species can be corrected (which will hopefully contribute to better detection in the future).
It also recognizes squirrels (I haven't tested it).
The camera has a speaker in addition to the microphone (! ) and when watching live you can say something (so for example to scare off unwanted species, or I don't know). I can remotely turn on the extra light or even turn on the audible scare alarm. However, it is not yet possible to set the alarm automatically (e.g. for specific species).
Possibility of (read-only) sharing to selected people (I haven't tried).
The app also has a sort of wall of posts with videos from other users, where you can also share interesting moments. Most importantly, there's a species search so you can see what the bird looks like elsewhere.
Overall it's well done, you can see they've been working on it for a long time.
A lot of birds in videos will recognize it, but sometimes they're at the wrong angle and stuff, and you just don't recognize them. Or there are 5 birds in the video and he recognizes 2. I don't think he wouldn't recognize them as a species, just from that particular video. Yet it is often very obvious what kind it is.
The AI sometimes recognizes the species of bird, but poorly. For example, the Titmouse is sometimes confused with the Coal Tit (say), but sometimes also with the Blackbird! (which is a very different bird).
The whole platform is very closed. The camera can only be used with the operator's cloud. You cannot connect to the camera locally. Theoretically it has an SD card slot, but this is supposedly only for debugging in production and is not user usable.
The service itself does not offer any API.
Access is basically only via a mobile app: The service does allow web access, but only to the live camera - no recognition, no history, no battery level, nothing.
Translations of bird species are sometimes inconsistent. Most are correct. But for example the blue tit is only translated in the app, but not in the alert! Warbler is not translated at all.
The power cable from the solar panel is a bit illogically placed on top of the camera. It is therefore necessary to make sure that the cable is bent and that water does not leak into the camera when it rains.
Opening the feeder is quite difficult, it takes some work. Maybe it's on purpose, but the first time I was afraid I'd ruin it.
