Huge disappointment. ASUS markets the product as gaming glasses, even in conjunction with the ROG Xbox Ally X. That made it all the more surprising to me that, in what is for me the most common gaming scenario, it is practically unusable. At 60 Hz in Anchor mode, or when Anti-shake is enabled, the glasses appear to use internal interpolation to 90 Hz (to provide smoother spatial image anchoring). The result is significantly disrupted frame pacing and very annoying microstutter when moving the camera. Although the image is still running on a 60Hz input, the gaming experience is noticeably worse. The only way to achieve a truly smooth 60Hz display is to use Follow mode only, with Anti-shake switched off. But that means you’re missing out on one of the main features that people buy these glasses for. Even much cheaper AR glasses can do that. I didn’t buy the glasses for watching films, but for gaming. And it was in this respect that the product disappointed me the most. What bothers me most, though, is that ASUS doesn’t mention this feature anywhere. I only found out that Anchor/Stabilizer uses internal interpolation at 60 Hz from a comment made by an XREAL employee in a discussion with users. For a product marketed as a gaming solution, I would expect transparent communication and the option to disable this interpolation. To me, the whole thing strikes me as a very unfortunate design decision, which was probably made without taking into account how games are actually played. I understand the desire to ensure the smoothest possible image stabilisation, but for a product marketed as a gaming monitor, I would always prioritise a faithful reproduction of the input signal and the option to switch any interpolation on or off according to my own preferences. What’s more, I’ve discovered that owners of XREAL glasses have also been dealing with a similar problem for several months now. Although XREAL has publicly stated that it is working on a software update, it is still not available at the time of writing this review. For this reason, I have decided to return the glasses. I don’t think a fix for the ASUS ROG XREAL R1 will be released any time soon, if at all. I’ll be happy to take another look at the product in a few months’ time, and if the firmware has indeed been fixed, I’ll be happy to reconsider my opinion.
comes across as a premium product
At 60 Hz, Anchor or Anti-shake cannot be used
fake 240Hz
They look like gaming glasses, but in reality they’re more like anything else
