I finally got to upgrade from my old Ryzen 7 1700. The CPU sits in a 7L case and let alone what the performance is in game so the temperature is (when playing) fine. Really a different universe of FPS and 1% lows for someone who was extremely CPU bottlenecked, a 7 year old proc really couldn't keep up with the 3070. I've been throwing proper hours into The Finals lately, previously at 90 FPS on the lowest setting with extreme FPS drops in action occasionally into the low 20s, it's now a smooth 90 FPS on High+RTX or 140 FPS on the lowest.
Power
W consumption per FPS
OC versus older gen x3d
Better temperatures compared to older gen
price, if I had the option I'd rather choose the 7800x3d back when they were 9500.

Exactly what you expect from X3D chips - gaming excellence. I'm not going to bring up the game performance too much here, everyone has written plenty of that everywhere. I have some cons against the processor, but they are rather negligible compared to the gaming performance and I mention them more for the consideration of potential buyers. If you need more multicore performance, get the cheaper Core Ultra 7 265K or i7-14700K, but you won't get the gaming performance of this chip. For me the biggest conflict of the chip is probably the use as a home server, on the one hand it supports ECC memory on "regular" boards, on the other hand in idle it will draw almost 2x more power than the Core Ultra 7 265K, which also has significantly more PCIe lines for disks and network cards. Well, the 9800X3D still gets 5 stars, but it's not a perfect chip in all respects, it's not a bad one, but for a desktop computer - both a spiffy gaming one and some smaller workstation - it's an absolutely great, and in many cases the only, choice.
Absolutely great gaming performance - for me exclusively Minecraft, as other games are limited by graphics, and in that it's a lovely +50%+ vs the current 12700KF and about +36% vs the 7800X3D.
The Zen 5 architecture is good at things where Intel has historically been ahead - programming, random small scripts, python, javascript, etc.
Decent power consumption under load, but thanks to the inverted V-Cache chiplet and thus better cooling it consumes a lot more than older X3D chips. (Mine about 135W in Cinebench R23)
ECC memory support if you have a compatible board.
V-Cache pretty much masks slower memory, especially a problem if you want ECC, as the fastest you can currently buy is 5600 CL46.
The box is a trimmed down copy of the 7800X3D, but at least AMD hasn't gone back to that awful plastic with the 5000 series - now it's filled with cardboard.
Easy to keep cool - Arctic Freezer 36 is enough, the Waterman is totally overkill.
For the price I have to point out the multicore performance, it's nice for an 8-core, but it's still only an 8-core. My typical x264 encode is a bit slower than the much cheaper i7-12700KF, VMAF is a bit faster, so OK. And the game performance is of course completely different.
Typical Ryzen consumption in idle or light use (like just web browsing or youtube video), Intel still leads there. Although better than chips without V-Cache, due to lower turbo clock and therefore voltage.
The AM5 platform isn't exactly a miracle if you want a lot of PCIe devices, but that's not the fault of the processor.

I had a 7800x3d and the difference in 1% low fps improved a lot the smoother gaming I've had yet. Unfortunately I got an inferior piece with no OC running beautifully at 60 degrees, but when I crank up the OC to 5.4ghz the gaming temperature goes up to 85 degrees. I haven't had time to play with it properly yet so we'll see the next BIOS version will hopefully improve it for now it's still in beta.
The best gaming processor
Stable 600fps+ in CS2
400+fps in the new Call of Duty at maximum detail in fullhd
The perfect combination to RTX 4090 and 540hz monitor
I didn't exactly hit on the best piece

absolutely the ultimate gaming beast. immediately earned a spot on my computer. As a replacement for the r5 7600 may not seem like a complete bargain. but it's still two extra cores, plus there's some generational shift, plus V-Cache. I've tried some basic OC and it's also great. Although it will require some more digging, but I see 5.5GHz allcore as promising. so more power for free. as a whole so far I have to rate the processor 6/5*
8 Zen 5 cores
V-Cache
v-Cache placed UNDER the kernels
unlocked multiplier
120 W TDP, realistically 50-60 W in gaming load
maybe the price? but for the ultimate gaming CPU that is much better at gaming than what the competition offers and still cheaper? don't take it
nothing so far
