I was very pleasantly surprised by the game. The graphics and gameplay are top notch, the map is beautiful and detailed, the cutscenes are almost cinematic at times, the characters are well crafted, written, and acted. For me, it's a great showcase of what the latest Unreal Engine can do. The game coped well with the "problems" arising from the time when the action takes place - especially the traffic. Apparently some cars were in Sicily a bit earlier than in the rest of the world, the game also has a fast travel system and the map isn't that huge after all. But the story is quite short and every twist and betrayal is seen an hour beforehand. But that kind of belongs to decades-old gangster stories. Count on the fact that open world in Mafia and open world e.g. things are a little different in the GTA. After all, many times Mafia won't let you do what you want and even though it is technically an open world game, the plot and the flow of missions is really linear and the game won't let you go off the beaten track. In a review I saw the saying "look, but don't touch", which really applies to me to some extent. The game does not contain so much content to play it for months, but for all the goals that the game tried to fulfill fulfills 110%. Which I think is much better than piles of unfinished content. Fan service and references to previous episodes are in the game, but so subtly presented that the untouched Mafia player will not even notice them and the die-hard fan will be pleased (e.g. subtle but crucial connection to the character Sam from the very first Mafia, the Sicilian mission from Mafia II set in the TOC capital, frequent references to Empire Bay, etc. ). The game often reminded me of RDR2. On the one hand, it has incomparably more content, but Mafia wins for me in the attention to detail and, surprisingly, visually. Summary: If you love the Mafia game series with its charm, atmosphere, and limitations, Mafia: TOC will be thrilled. If you want a massive open world RPG that you'll be playing all next year, I'd look elsewhere.
