The 1/3.2" sensor size refers to the physical dimensions of the image sensor, which is a key camera component responsible for converting light into a digital image. This format is among the smaller sensors, typically used in mobile phones and older compact cameras. The designation "1/3.2 inch" does not directly correspond to the sensor's diagonal, but is a historical standard derived from the diameter of vacuum imaging tubes. The actual diagonal of this sensor is approximately 5.68 millimeters. The physical size of the sensor affects the quality of the resulting photograph, especially the amount of noise in poorer lighting conditions and the ability to achieve a shallow depth of field, i.e., a significantly blurred background.
