1/1" Sensor Size

The 1/1" sensor size refers to a specific category of image chip in a camera. This designation is historical and does not come from direct measurement. The sensor's diagonal actually measures not one inch, which is approximately 25.4 millimeters, but around 16 millimeters. The "one-inch" naming is derived from the outer diameter of vacuum image tubes called vidicons, which were previously used in television cameras. Sensors of this size are physically larger than the chips found in common mobile phones or basic compact cameras. A larger sensor area allows for capturing more light, which contributes to higher image quality, especially in poorer lighting conditions, where it results in lower digital noise levels. It also makes it easier to achieve a shallow depth of field, or the effect of a blurred background. This type of sensor represents a compromise between small chips and significantly larger APS-C or full-frame sensors, which are found in larger system cameras.
