Optical Viewfinder (OVF)

An optical viewfinder is a component of a camera that allows the photographer to look directly through the lens or through a separate clear window to compose the shot. In digital single-lens reflex cameras, referred to as DSLRs (Digital Single-Lens Reflex), the image from the lens is reflected via a mirror and a pentaprism directly into the photographer's eye. This provides an authentic view of the scene, without any electronic processing and without delay. The moment the shutter button is pressed, the mirror briefly flips up to allow the image to fall onto the sensor, and the viewfinder blacks out. In simpler cameras, it may be a separate clear window next to the lens. This type can suffer from what is known as parallax, which is a slight shift between the image in the viewfinder and the actual image captured by the lens, particularly noticeable when shooting close-up. Unlike an electronic viewfinder, it does not display a preview of the final photograph with applied exposure settings such as brightness or color rendition, and it does not consume battery power.
