Eye detection is an autofocus function that can automatically find an eye in the frame and focus on it. It is an advanced form of face detection that focuses on the most important part of a portrait. The camera system uses software, often with artificial intelligence elements, to analyze the image, identify the face, and then locate the eye. It then guides the focus point to this spot. This frees the photographer from having to precisely manually place the focus point on the eye of the subject or animal. Modern systems can track a moving eye in real time, and some even allow selecting whether to focus on the left or right eye. There are also specialized modes for animal eye detection, for instance, for dogs, cats, or birds.
