A microwave is an indispensable device in any kitchen. In addition to reheating and defrosting, multifunction microwaves are able to bake, grill or steam food, and can even combine several functions at once. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right one?

Space-saving microwaves
The ideal type of microwave depends on the other appliances in your kitchen. For example, if your oven has a grill, it is not necessary to buy a microwave with the same function. Do you plan to use the microwave to prepare most meals, or just to heat up leftovers from time to time? For occasional meals, basic functions are sufficient, but for regular use, the ability to steam or grill food comes in very useful.
Microwaves range between 13 and 45 litres in volume, with turntable plates between 24 and 40 cm in diameter. Smaller models allow you to reheat food on a regular-sized plate, but larger models allow for easier preparation of pizza, poultry or larger plates of food.
Built-in microwaves fit seamlessly into custom-made kitchens, taking up less space than freestanding models. In contrast, freestanding microwaves can be moved easily and placed anywhere in the kitchen, but take up considerable surface space.
Microwave turntable plates range between 24 and 40 cm in diameter. A diameter of 24 cm is sufficient for heating food on a regular-sized plate. Microwaves with larger turntable plates allow you to heat larger amounts of fod, cook a whole chicken, or heat up a pizza.
Power consumption affects the time it takes to heat food. While microwaves are available from 500 W power, 1000 W is recommended for everyday use. Generally, the higher the wattage, the less time it will take your dish to cook.
Microwaves allow you to set different power levels for different types of food and different functions. For example, a lower output is required for defrosting, whereas a higher output is needed for quickly reheating food.
Some cheaper microwaves are operated using mechanical dials. Most models, however, feature electronic controls, with more expensive models boasting touch screens.
The outer casing of a microwave can be made of plastic, stainless steel, or a combination of both. Generally, stainless steel models are more expensive than plastic ones.
Automatic programs are a common feature of microwave ovens. Once you have entered the weight and type of food to be prepared, the microwave automatically sets the timing and power. Some microwaves allow for multiphase preparation, which typically include defrosting and cooking in one program.
A timer is a common microwave feature that allows you to set the exact heating time.
Microwave ovens with a grill are not only suitable for warming up your food, but also for grilling meat, vegetables or fish. The grill function is also suitable for cooking pastries or browning pasta bakes.
Internal capacity
The internal volume of microwaves ranges between 13 and 45 litres. For normal use, 19 litres is sufficient, but you may have problems thawing large amounts of poultry. If you plan to grill large amounts of food or prepare pizzas, choose a microwave with a capacity of 20 litres or more.
