LUT preview is a function that allows a live image with applied color adjustments to be displayed on the camera's screen or in its viewfinder, even though the recording is saved in its original, unmodified form. The abbreviation LUT stands for Look-Up Table, which is essentially a predefined table of instructions that modifies the colors, contrast, and brightness of an image. This function is most commonly used when shooting video in special picture profiles, referred to as "log" profiles. The image from these profiles is intentionally flat, with low contrast, and muted colors, to capture the maximum amount of image information for later editing. However, working with such an image in real-time is difficult. Thanks to LUT preview, the cameraman sees an approximate final version of the video on the display, which greatly facilitates the correct setting of exposure, focus, and composition. The video recording itself, however, is saved in the original flat "log" profile, thereby maintaining maximum flexibility for final color adjustments in post-production.
